San Pedro de Macoris is a town about an hour east of the
capital. It’s known as the “land of
shortstops” for the large number of baseballs players that have come from San
Pedro, including Sammy Sosa.
Pasteles en hoja
Previously pasteles en hoja was not my favorite
food, but I found some I loved! This
restaurant, Amable, is famous for their pasteles en hoja. (In fact, they don’t serve anything
else.) Pasteles en hoja are mashed
platanos or yuca filled with meat or vegetables and are cooked wrapped in plantain
leaves.

La Cueva de las Maravillas is a well preserved cave with
over 500 pictographs, petroglyphs, and engravings. The cave’s architects won the International
Landscape Architecture Bienal Award in 2003 for the beautifully designed foot
paths and lighting.
